Tips for Tipping

After working all weekend: 5-11 Friday night, 4-Close Saturday night & open-close Sunday I'm really starting to take bad tipping personally. Though I know I shouldn't.

In fact, it's so blatantly obvious that people are just unaware of how to tip that I know I shouldn't take it personally. But I do. Why? Because when you don't tip you're messing directly with my income, my livelihood. Get it?

And how is it so obvious that they don't simply hate me, but instead don't understand? Because they'll smile so sweetly and say, "Thank you so much, you were wonderful!" And yet on that $50 total ticket they'll leave me $6.

As much as I should appreciate the compliment, I immediately don't. I'm just pissed off that they have the nerve to tell me how wonderful I am and then tip me like they hate me. This happened to me so much yesterday that I almost cried.

Slow season is officially here, so my money has already began decreasing PLUS I'm getting terrible tips and people have suddenly turned rude? Not okay, not okay.

So if you're unsure how to tip, please please let me help you!!

  • Sometimes you'll get a terrible server. But guess what- everyone has bad days. You never know what's going on with that person.. NEVER leave less than 15%, I'm serious. Of course there's always the exception..  for instance a few weeks ago we were at Applebees. Our server kept bringing us refills and wouldn't clear our table at all, and she wasn't busy at all either. In fact she left our 8 empty cups on the table the entire meal along with our empty plates until we left. And as her other tables began to leave I saw the poor bus boy stuck with all of her stacked-high empty glass and plate filled tables. So I was angry with her and left her 14% (I don't believe in leaving less than $4- that'll come later).
  • If you return to a restaurant, have the same server and they suck again.. well no more benefit of the doubt. Tip them shitty, but at least tip them (no less than 10% preferred)
  • The newest 2014 tipping standard is 20%. If your server wasn't bad, you got everything you needed and she/he was somewhat friendly, they're probably worth of that 20%.
  • 20% tips are easy to figure out WITHOUT the use of a calculator. You take the first two numbers of the check and multiply that by 2! For example if your check is $52.20 20% would be right about $10.40. Another example $34.00 check would be $6.80 (just round up to $7!)
  • Welcome to my $4.00 rule. Many people don't understand that servers have assigned sections and usually only have 5-7 tables in their section. If you and your sweet-thang go out to dinner and split a meal creating a total of $10.75 leave a tip as if both of you ordered a meal! They're expecting two meals out of you which gives them a general idea of how much you should spend, plus they have now have lower sales which means less tips!
  • COUPONS! If you go to a restaurant and spend $55 but somehow have a Restaurant.com or doubletakeoffers.com coupon receiving half or $25 off of your total YOU TIP BEFORE THE DISCOUNT. That's right. If you spent $55 and you're getting $25 off creating a total of $30 you DO NOT leave $6, you leave $11. Please, I'm begging you. All of us servers together are begging you. And oh yeah, if you haven't looked into those websites you should do so!
  • Tips are what we live off of. I won't sit here and say that my paychecks are $0.00 like some people claim (hey, maybe it's true). But after working 25 hours a week my paychecks every 2 weeks are about $120.. if you do the math that is $2.40/hour after claiming tips and taking out taxes.
  • Let's talk carry-out really quick. With this I don't request that you necessarily tip 20%. However, at least 10%, ESPECIALLY if you have a large order. Because guess who gets to take the time to put in your order, bag your order and cash you out? That's me! And it's directly affecting my total sales for the shift which in turn creates a less than 20% of total sales take-home at the end of the shift.
  • Unless you're positive it's your server's fault something bad happens during your meal (example: you don't receive refills, extra napkins, side condiments, etc.) don't take it out on the server. Anytime I mess something up I'll fess up immediately to the table, and apologize. I never want people to think my cooks aren't doing their job correctly when it's my fault. If then, they decide that the onion that came on their burger was such a huge hassle for the extra 3 minutes they had to wait for a new bun to be made is worth deducting tip from, then so be it. But for me, it's about being honest and making things right. Granted, not everyone is like this. I've worked with people who blame the kitchen 100% of the time, even when it is their fault.
I'm sure a missed a couple of other tips... feel free to leave comments asking questions for other situations. I have ALL of the answers, just kidding.. but I do have a lot!

If you've been tipping poorly it's never too late to change! You just don't wanna be that guy/girl that comes into a restaurant and nobody wants to take you because they already KNOW you tip like shit. Don't be that guy.

Xoxo,
    B!

Sorry, but you are doing the *SAME AMOUNT OF WORK*, so it should get the *SAME* TIP as the other people that can't get tipped and even sometimes doing LESS WORK.

As far as what you have to tip out, that's between *YOU* and *YOUR EMPLOYER*, so don't put that into anything, because that means absolutely NOTHING! That's your issue.

Tipping for take-out is honestly morally wrong, because it's UNFAIR. You can't tip for a to-go order at McDonald's you pick up inside, you shouldn't tip for anyone else that does the same or more work than you do. It's only *FAIR*.

"Because guess who gets to take the time to put in your order, bag your order and cash you out?"

SO THE FUCK WHAT??? You are doing FAST FOOD CASHIER WORK, so you should receive the same *PAY* from the customer.

The only way it would be fair to tip you if you did a good job of course getting the order obviously correct is if we could tip ALL fast food cashiers. Since we can't, why don't you expect it to be *FAIR*, huh? If we can't tip them for doing a to-go order, why should YOU get a tip? It's not fair.

"And it's directly affecting my total sales for the shift which in turn creates a less than 20% of total sales take-home at the end of the shift.""

Not anyone else's problem but yours. That's your EMPLOYER making you tip out, NOT the customer. The customer has NOTHING to do with that. Their service VERY MUCH DEFINITELY HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THAT!

Don't punish us because you have to tip out. You don't like it, don't be a server.

"COUPONS! If you go to a restaurant and spend $55 but somehow have a Restaurant.com or doubletakeoffers.com coupon receiving half or $25 off of your total YOU TIP BEFORE THE DISCOUNT."

Large amounts like that I will agree with you, but not a $5 off coupon, NO, because if it's $5 off of 2 entrées, it means $2.50 less per entrée, which means when prices go up due to inflation we tip higher, so when prices go lower, we should tip lower. It's not fair to ALWAYS be in the server's favor with coupons. You don't like it, don't work at a place that has coupons. A lot of places don't have coupons. It's not all about your money. Our money counts JUST AS MUCH AS YOURS DOES. Why have a $5 off coupon if we can't use the entire $5 off of our bill before we figure out the tip, huh? It's not fair to ALWAYS be in the server's favor.

"If you and your sweet-thang go out to dinner and split a meal creating a total of $10.75 leave a tip as if both of you ordered a meal!"

NOPE, sorry, 20% is 20% no matter HOW MUCH you got. We didn't order 2 meals though. There's no more work involved except to give an extra plate, which you do that anyways with appetizers, so that's not really extra work if you think about it when someone orders an appetizer. I don't understand why you think that ONLY YOUR MONEY COUNTS. OURS COUNTS JUST AS MUCH AS YOURS DOES. Do you compare the menu prices to the check prices BEFORE you give your customers their checks? I bet you don't, because you are so SELF-ABSORBED just thinking about JUST YOUR MONEY, NOT ANYONE ELSE'S.

You just said "20% tips are easy to figure out WITHOUT the use of a calculator", yet you don't want people to tip 20% because it's a low bill that you want more. Sorry, but unless my service is really WOWED me, you won't get more than the 20%.

  5. "You never know what's going on with that person.."

Same with customers, what's your point here SELFISH??? THE WORLD DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND JUST SERVERS! What a SELFISH PERSON you are.

The one thing I can do is thank you for apologizing for your mistakes as you said you do which is one HUGE thing that most servers don't do.

"NEVER leave less than 15%, I'm serious."

My husband and I have left everything from over 30% like 34% or so to STIFFED and anything as well as anything in between. It depends on the *SERVICE*. If you suck, you get a shitty tip. If you are wonderful you get a good tip. If you are in between there, you get an in between tip, etc., etc.

You get what you give. You give me no effort, then what do you expect your tip to be? You bust your butt, you will get a better tip even if you made the same mistake as the person that gave me no effort, because I saw you TRIED at least.

"If you return to a restaurant, have the same server and they suck again.. well no more benefit of the doubt. Tip them shitty, but at least tip them (no less than 10% preferred)"

I try to avoid the same one that gave me bad service before I get seated if I can.

"Our server kept bringing us refills and wouldn't clear our table at all,"

While that is something that bugs me, it would be bug me a ZILLION TIMES MORE if I didn't get refills as most people would. Why didn't you *ASK* if the server can take some glasses? Did that EVER OCCUR TO YOU to *ASK* for what you want?

I PROVED YOU WRONG, that's why you deleted my comments, why can't you just TELL THE TRUTH FOR ONCE AND QUIT BEING SO GOD DAMN MF SELFISH, HUH?

Money isn't all about JUST THE SERVER! OUR MONEY COUNTS *********JUST AS MUCH AS YOURS DOES*********! STOP BEING SO SELFISH!

    1. I didn't delete any of your comments. I'm not here to be rude or anything like that. But thank you for your vulgar response, I suppose. I don't have an issue when I receive a poor tip if I give bad service, but that rarely happens. I'm a very good waitress, I've been doing it many years and I work very hard to make others happy. It gets very frustrating time and time again when you receive 10% tips when you're giving 30% service. That's all I'm saying. Also, you can tip almost anyone you please. Trust me, I do it ALL the time. Anywhere I go, if I get even decent service I tip (even your drive-thru workers, I assure you). But I feel very bad for you. You're the exact type of person I write to when posting blogs like this. I'm sorry that on your Friday night you have nothing better to do than respond to my blog posting being vulgar language towards someone you don't even know. Also, calling me selfish is very rude. I'm just a hard-worker trying to inform others who aren't intelligent enough to inform themselves (: Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for taking the time to read my blog!

    2. "You're the exact type of person I write to when posting blogs like this."

NO I am NOT at ALL. We tip 25%-30% and UPWARDS for wonderful service, so don't you DARE group me with the 10% jerks.

Also, what is 30% service in your opinion? 30% service is to not make ONE MISTAKE, NOT ONE. It's also to not delay your refills or things you ask for. It's also not to have to ask for things again and again because you didn't write them down. 30% service is when *I* get to make the shots like I can't stand when servers bring you the check without asking first even if I ended up wanting the check, it's the fact that they made a decision that just wasn't theirs to make.

" Also, calling me selfish is very rude. "

HOW? Saying this "YOU TIP BEFORE THE DISCOUNT" IS SELFISH. $5 off coupons should be based on AFTER discount. It's not fair if we tip higher when prices go higher not to tip on the bill price when the prices go lower. BE FAIR, then you wouldn't be called selfish.

"I didn't delete any of your comments."

Then where are my original post then? Why does it say this: "his comment has been removed by a blog administrator."??

"And it's directly affecting my total sales for the shift "

HOW is that statement not SELFISH as can be, huh? NOBODY SHOULD PUT THAT INTO THEIR SERVICE JUDGING WHEN THEY TIP. That's NOT PART OF ANYONE'S SERVICE. NO ONE GIVES A SHIT. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO TIP OUT. I CARE ABOUT WHAT KIND OF SERVICE I RECEIVED. I RECEIVED FAST FOOD COUNTER SERVICE LIKE MCDONALD'S, YOU SHOULD RECEIVE THE *SAME* TIP AS THEM TO BE ****100% FAIR************. It's your EMPLOYER that is unfair if they are still paying you $2.13/hr to do a take-out order. By law, you are supposed to make min. wage if you don't get any tips during each hour. Don't punish OUR MONEY, because you happen to not like what your *EMPLOYER* pays you. That's NOT OUR PROBLEM, that's YOURS. STOP BEING SO GOD DAMN MF SELFISH. To even MENTION that you have to tip out is selfish. YOU DON'T SEE THAT, HUH? WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SERVICE? Tips are for *********SERVICE*************, NOT because you have to tip out from sales. I don't tip based on sales. I tip based on your performance.

You don't want to be labled selfish, stop talking about that you have to tip out, stop acting like people should tip you for fast food counter help service that others CAN'T LEGALLY get money from, and stop acting like people shouldn't tip after certain discounts. You have to agree with me, because it's the GOD'S TRUTH that it is 100% TOTALLY UNFAIR when prices go higher due to inflation we tip higher so your tip goes higher, so when we get a $5 off of 2 entrées coupon, that the prices of the 2 items went lower, so it's ONLY FAIR to tip on the $2.50 off the entrée price of each entrée. IT IS. You can't argue with that you are being SELFISH about it ONE-SIDED about it. Think about YOUR CUSTOMER'S MONEY, NOT JUST YOURS and that's WHY you are selfish. STOP BEING SO SELFISH. It's not rude, it's the ******TRUTH**********. You really can't see by mentioning tipping out on sales that you have to do that, THAT in-of-itself is SELFISH to even MENTION? Customers don't tip based on you tipping out on sales. They base tips on your ************SERVICE*********. Isn't that what tips are for "TO INSURE PROPER SERVICE", right? So since tips are for service, tipping out means NOTHING. STOP BEING SO SELFISH MENTIONING MONEY YOU HAVE TO TIP OUT. Tips are for service, NOTHING MORE. They aren't because you have to tip out and you know it. That is just SO SELFISH to mention. WHY can't you admit that, huh? BE HONEST is what I am looking for.

    3. I checked out your blogs. You have a lot of issues. You're nothing but a troll. Congratulations on trying to make people feel down about themselves, and often. I hope that one day you find something that makes you happy, really. You need it. I'll keep you in my thoughts you anonymous, non-face-showing blogger friend. Also, a hobby would be helpful. Writing paragraph opinions when not asked isn't very appealing for a personality trait. Learn to smile, or laugh (best advice you may ever receive). Take care!

    4. I am *NOT* a troll. I tell the *GOD'S TRUTH* in ALL MY BLOGS and you know it.

It has NOTHING to do with making people feel down. It has to do with being *FAIR* which you aren't. Tipping fairly would be to not tip for a to-go order when you can't legally do it at McDonald's for that cashier that is getting me for example hotcakes w/sausage which the cashier gets some syrups in one box, some butters in another box, some jelly in another box, a fork in another box, a knife in another box, taking my order, ringing it up, giving me change or the credit card receipt. Meanwhile let's say someone orders a pasta dish at Applebee's, which they already have an all-in-one fork, knife, salt/pepper napkin plastic bag already for the customer. All they have to do is put it in the bag. It's ***************************SIGNIFICANTLY LESS WORK, YET, the worker that did MORE WORK COULDN'T LEGALLY RECEIVE A TIP. HOW IS THAT *FAIR* or *MORALLY* RIGHT, HUH?

Also, being not fair about coupons. When prices go up we have to tip higher, so when prices go lower, shouldn't we be able to pay the same way the prices go to be *FAIR* to not *ALWAYS* be in just ONE person's favor(whether it is the server's or the customer's favor)?

I am not a troll. I am is telling you the truth that you are VERY SELFISH and by even MENTIONING tipping out is SELFISH, YOU KNOW IT that is the GOD'S HONEST TRUTH, because it is.

Tipping out means NOTHING to the customer's service. People tip based on service, not if you have to pay other employees. I am not sure WHY you think someone should give ONE IOTA about what you have to pay because your employer tells you to share your tips, huh?

It has NOTHING to do with making you feel down. It has to do with you realizing the world DOESN'T EVER REVOLVE JUST AROUND SERVER'S MONEY. OUR MONEY COUNTS TOO! You don't understand how you are so SELF-CENTERED ONE SIDED about the money issue and how you want people to be unfair when tipping. If I can't tip McDonald's cashiers for my hotcakes and sausage them doing MORE PHYSICAL LABOR, WHY is it fair to tip for a pasta dish that has SIGNIFICANTLY LESS WORK, huh? Less work should equal less pay. It's only fair. The more work you do, don't you feel you deserve more pay than 20% if you did extra for a customer that dined inside? If you do, then how is this ANY DIFFERENT than what I am saying to do for a to-go order, huh? No one should be tipping unfairly. Everyone should tip in a fair manner. If all fast food workers got tipped, I would gladly tip for a to-go order as long as I had good service, but since we can't, I am not going to be unfair to the other workers in this world that can't get tipped for doing at times even MORE WORK than you do.

The mentioning you tipping out shouldn't happen PERIOD, because it's not relevant to anyone's service they are tipping on.

Talking about coupons when it's a low amount is unfair to everyone. We shouldn't have to just worry about our server's money. Especially since they aren't worried about ours. I bet you don't compare each price on the menu to the check *BEFORE* you give the customer their check, do you? If you don't, you are a SELFISH UNCARING human being. Any server that *CARED* about OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY would do this, would NEVER mentioning tipping out, would NEVER even think they should get tipped for a to-go order, would NEVER think tipping on a coupon should always be in their favor, etc.

People that care and aren't selfish don't do the things you are saying to do or consider.

  6. Continued:

"Writing paragraph opinions when not asked isn't very appealing for a personality trait. "

It's a *FACT* it isn't fair to tip always based on the original bill. It's a *FACT* it is selfish to just mention tipping out you have to do. It is a *FACT* you want people to tip unfairly by not every employee not have a chance to make tips too.

    "non-face-showing blogger friend."

I'm smart not to show my face. I wouldn't want people to save my picture on their computer and me have no knowledge of it. It's creepy to do that. That's why I have no picture on the internet or facebook or anything like that. You are brave to put your picture on here for the world to see. That's crazy if you ask me, but that's just my opinion.

  7. You keep saying I am a troll. I am just telling you the truth. The truth hurts, doesn't it? You are being selfish, you are truly are. Why should a customer always tip based on BEFORE a discount? I can see a large discount since that would be a lot of the work you did, but not something like $5 or less, no.

You are being selfish when you mention tipping out. No customer should have to know this and this isn't part of the way people tip. People don't tip based on that you have to tip out. They base their tip on your performance. If it's a to-go order, you should get the same pay as EVERYONE else that does a to-go order. That is only fair.

I repeated myself, but to show you that you are being very selfish. You still can't admit that, why is that, huh?

I will repost this from the previous post just to reiterate:

Any server that *CARED* about OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY would do this, would NEVER mentioning tipping out, would NEVER even think they should get tipped for a to-go order, would NEVER think tipping on a coupon should always be in their favor, etc.
